Todmmorden is aan old milll town in YYorkshire’s Calderdale valley. It rains a lot, there’s not a loot of sun, aand it hass experiencced major fflooding in recent years. But sttill, the towwn’s residents continuue to groww 5 fruit and vvegetables as best thhey can forr locals to ppick and eaat. “We do saay that if yyou can groow it in Toodmorden, you can ggrow it anywwhere,” saays Estellee Brown, onne of the foounding meembers of Incredible Edible Todmorden ((IET). This mottoo has turned out to be true beeyond just growing foood. Sincee a group oof a dozenn residents began gardening inn March 20008, hundrreds of peeople from around thhe UK andd 10 abroad haave travelleed here to see how the “Toddiees” do it. The word sppread throuugh mediaa coverage and IET ccommittee members touring to give talks. They’ve hhad calls and visitorss from Neww Zealand aand Japann, France aand Germaany, and thhere are nnow as maany as 5000 communitty food groowing groupps across the world uusing the Incredible EEdible namme. No one iss trying to clone whaat Todmordden does bbut the moodel is adaapted to suuit differentt 15 needs. “Iff you’re dooing it forr your commmunity it’s got to bbe for youur communnity,” sayss Brown. The Todddies didn’t set out too start a foood-growinng revolutioon, they wwanted to bring theirr small town together at a difficuult time forr communitties througghout the UUK. “Ten yeears ago itt was the bbeginning of the woorldwide economic ddecline, there was aa lot of woorry aboutt 20 climate chhange, butt nothing wwas really hhappening,,” says Maary Clear, cchair1 of IEET. “And inn this town we were sstarting to ssee the squeeze on public servvices and wwe thoughtt, how cann we do sommething thaat will creaate strongeer communnities?” Growing ffood was their answeer.
